Saturday evening saw a great gathering at Abbey Hill Golf Club for the annual Tennis Works and Stony Stratford Tennis Club Junior presentation evening. Children and parents, committee members, supporters and guests packed out the event to celebrate the past year’s development and achievement of the juniors at the club.

The guest of honour, who presented the evenings awards was Councillor Keith McLean, Mayor of Milton Keynes.

John Cavill of Tennis Works and Director of Tennis at Stony began proceedings by applauding the growth of the junior programme both at the club, in the schools satellite programme as well as the success of the ‘girls tennis initiative’. This is encouraging girls into the sport for the first time, and has seen us since September last year, give 856 a taste of tennis. In the Aegon Team Tennis, we won Bucks Division 1 in the 16&U Boys and came runners up in the 8&U Div 2, 12&U Boys Div 1, 12&U Boys Div 2 and 14&U Boys Div 1. A fantastic achievement in our third year in the competition.

He thanked the support and involvement of the parents and the club in providing the environment which encouraged such growth and development of young children and juniors.

Keith McLean echoed this sentiment and said what a progressive and developing club Stony was and how it encouraged such a friendly family environment with first rate facilities, and all this was made possible by the many volunteers who helped. Keith shared stories from his own tennis experience and his love and passion for tennis was evident as he interfaced with young and old alike.

Councillor Keith McLean presented the Player of the year awards for each age group to:

  • 8&U Finley Griffiths
  • 9&U Ashton Gallimore
  • 10&U Johnny Brown
  • 12&U Umar Gull
  • 14&U Aidan Varela
  • 16&U Emily Honor

Additionally, two Inspiration awards, recognising hard work, dedication and attitude in individuals went to the following:

  • Mini Tennis Inspiration Award           Ren Church

The Tennis Works Player of the Year award went to Dylan Smith. He has had a great year, representing Bucks in the County Cup for the 5th year running, wining the Cambridge Summer grade 3, Boston 16U grade 4, Dallington 18U grade 5, as well as the SSLTC club champs at 14U, 16U and 18U. In the 14&U category he is ranked 115 in the country, 27th in the region and 3rd in the county.

Simon Burn, Club Chairman, thanked everyone who had been involved in the development of the junior programme, particularly John and the Tennis Works team.  He said, ‘I love the way the partnership with Tennis Works is bearing such fruit, attracting new members to the club, raising the playing standards and encouraging players to just enjoy the environment and time spent time.

John Cavill was heard speaking with Keith McLean towards the end of the evening and said. ‘It's been another amazing year and there are loads of people here! This shows how important the club and Tennis Works is to everyone. As the word spreads, more people can benefit from what we offer and enjoy this wonderful sport’.
