The 2012 Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club Junior Open Tournament

Monday the 20th August saw the start of this year's, week-long 2012 Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club Junior Open Tournament. An LTA Grade 4 event, now in its second year. The event organised and run by Tennis Works and sponsored by the club, saw juniors from all over Bucks and some surrounding counties compete again each other in a number of competitions to earn not only the honour of winning their particular age related competition but also LTA ranking and grading points.

The week saw the courts closed to members during the hours of the event as full use was made of the facilities to support such a prestigious tournament. Members of the Tennis Works team led by Melvyn Jones (Business Director) ensured the event ran smoothly with assistance from club committee members, and of course the Ace Cafe which kept the organisers, players and parents fed and watered throughout the week. Rob Stean, the official LTA referee was on hand throughout to keep us all in order.

The weather was kind, with only the occasional shower, despite the forecast and play was only suspended once. The dedication and effort of all the players was fantastic and the manner that all games were played in echoed the Olympic spirit. The tennis was of a high level throughout and everyone had a great time.

Monday 20th August saw the 8&U mixed Mini Tennis Red and the preliminary stages of the 10&U mixed Mini Tennis Green events take place.

The Mini Tennis Red saw some amazing thoughtful tactical tennis being played as some players made full use of the court, unusual at this level. The round robin was dominated by two players, Calum Fairey and Jack Lay. Calum was unbeaten in the round robin, defeating Jack in his final match. However the final saw Jack come out on top and taking the title, winning by the closest of margins 10-8.

Paul Gilroy of Tennis Works officiated over this event and made the presentations along with Jan Taylor, Ladies Team Captain of the club.

The Mini Tennis Green preliminary event two players dominate the A group, culminating with Edward Searle coming out on top to reach the final. Group A saw an amazing final match in which Jon -Luca Wilde came through.

Wednesday 22nd August saw the 9&U mixed Mini Tennis Orange and the preliminary stages of the 12&U Boys competition.

The Mini Tennis Orange was every bit as entertaining as the Red had been on Monday. Both round robin groups were evenly contested and could not have been closer. Edward Searle convincing won Group A, but Daniel Rowland went through at the expense of Louis Cooke (both based at Stony) by the narrowest of margins. Group B saw Andrew Brewster and Jacob Parsons qualify for the knock-out stages. The final saw Edward Searle defeat Daniel Rowland 7-3 7-3.

Rob Stean led the presentation ceremony and the awards were made by a very special guest, Judy Angus, President of the club and former Head Coach.

The 12&U Boys preliminary event saw a more one sided set of matches in Group A as James George and Finlay Barrett qualified. Group B saw Alexander Baptist and  Oliver Rainbird win through after some tight, closely fought matches. Unfortunately Alexander Baptist had to withdraw from Finals Day giving Finlay Barrett a walk over to the final.

Friday 24th August saw the early rounds of the 14&U Boys and Girls events. The Boys saw Oliver Thomas, Tom Ramsden, Jonathan Reed, Adam Sparkes, James Riley and Thomas Cunild win through to finals day. The Girls saw Stephanie Reynolds, Muchaneta Nhau, Olivia Ray and Meera Kumar win through to finals day. Unfortunately Muchaneta Nhau withdrew meaning Stephanie Reynolds was awarded a walkover for 3rd place.

Saturday 25th August - Finals Day: A dull day dawned but it did not dampen the quality of the tennis on display.
