The Stony Stratford Tennis Club Junior Open Tournament is only in its second year and is already establishing itself as one of the Grade 4 Tournaments to attend and compete in during August. This year’s competition,  organised once again by Tennis Works, commenced on Monday 20th and culminated in ‘Finals’ day on Saturday 25th. Youngsters and juniors from Bucks and the surrounding counties entered competitions  ranging from Mini Tennis Red for the 8 and under age group, through the various levels and age groups, up to the 14 and Under competitions.

As the Tournament was an LTA accredited Grade 4 event, which earned grading and ranking points for entrants, it was officiated over by referee Rob Stean, who organised the individual competition draws and ensured the tournament rules were adhered to.

The winners of each category were as follows:

Mini Tennis Red – 8&U mixed:  Jack Lay of Olney

Mini Tennis Orange – 9&U mixed: Edward Searle of Riverside

Mini Tennis Green – 10&U mixed: Edward Searle of Riverside

Boys 12&U: Finlay Barrett of Chesham 1879

Girls 14&U: Olivia Ray of Halton

Boys 14&U: James Riley of Riverside

Local club players just missed out on a number of titles, losing in the final. Daniel Rowland in the 9&U Mixed; Meera Kumar in the Girls 14&U, and Tom Cunild in the Boys 14&U.

The Red and Orange competitions were played in full in the week and the trophies were presented by Jan Taylor, Ladies Team Captain and Judy Angus, Club President. Finals Day saw Brian Berrill representing the committee, giving a fine speech, commenting on the quality of tennis he had observed. Trophies were again presented by Jan Taylor.

Melvyn Jones, Business Director of Tennis Works who ran the event praised the support of everyone involved. He said,  "I would like to applaud everyone  who helped make this week so enjoyable. The parents for supporting all the players across the many matches, not just their own children. The players, who gave of their all and produced high quality tennis  throughout, played in a spirit of fair play and respect. The committee and membership of the club who sponsored and supported the event and particularly John and Jon Taylor and Brian Berrill. Not forgetting of course the Tennis Works Team who ensured that the event ran smoothly. Even the weather was kind to us’!
