Welcome message from the New Director of Tennis

To: Members of Stony Stratford Lawn Tennis Club (SSLTC)

From: John Cavill – Director of Tennis (SSLTC)

Dear Member,

Further to the communication you have recently received from the Club Chairman, Simon Burn, I am delighted to introduce myself as your newly appointed Director of Tennis. Over the next few months, I would like to speak to as many of you as possible so that your opinions and suggestions can help me shape the way we develop the clubs tennis programme, so please pop into the office at the club and say hello to me or my business partner Melvyn Jones, who will be assisting me in delivering the services. We will be moving into the office and spending time at the club outside of coaching commitments to make ourselves accessible to you.

The name of our Company is Tennis Works so you will start to receive some communications from us but please be assured that our primary objective is to deliver an excellent service to you as members of Stony Stratford LTC. We share the Committee’s vision of ensuring SSLTC is the premier family club in the area as well as providing competitive tennis to all abilities up to the highest level. We are here to serve you.

Next Steps

  • We will be emailing you a questionnaire / survey for you to give us your views. Hard copies will be available in the club or you can just pop in and give us your views
  • During this transition period, John Skinner will continue with his commitments until Saturday 16th July, whilst at the same time handing over duties to me.
  • The Summer Camps will commence on Monday 25th July, please visit www.tennisworks.net/summercamps for more information and online bookings.
  • The new Coaching Programme will start in September and will be advertised in late July.
  • The current programme of club nights, matches and events will run as normal and we will give you feedback on our initial plans and what new tennis opportunities there will be later in the summer.

A little bit about us

I have been associated with SSLTC for the last three years, working in partnership with John Skinner and coaching performance juniors at the club, many of you will already know me from this. During this time it has been great to see what an ambitious and forward thinking club Stony is. It was therefore an honour and privilege when I was offered this newly formed position of Director of Tennis.

I have been coaching for over 17 years trading under the company name Tennis Works and I have established a team with the purpose of ‘inspiring tennis excellence’. I am very lucky to have the support from my business partner, Melvyn Jones. During my time as a coach, I have had the pleasure of working with many players, parents, coaches and others involved in the game of tennis, that it has given me invaluable knowledge at every level and a deep understanding into the requirements of the game.

My aim is to ensure that everyone enjoys this wonderful sport and that their thirst for knowledge, personal discovery and understanding of the game is met and I am fortunate to have worked with internationally recognised coaches and players. I have never lost sight of grass roots development and have and always will be heavily involved in coaching at all levels. My passion for developing tennis comes from being very privileged to be introduced to the sport as a junior and I believe that the life skills and benefits tennis has given me should be available to everyone. Our programmes are a great medium to help improve a player’s skill in tennis and we pride ourselves on being able to enhance that determination for self-improvement.

I am humbled by the open support and involvement from world class players and coaches, like Jo Durie (former world number 5), Alan Jones (Jo Durie’s former coach), Jofre Porta (former coach to Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal), Keith Reynolds (ATP Tour coach and international coach educator) and many more internationally acclaimed contributors who I regularly communicate with and share good practice ideas with.

Melvyn has a wealth of business and development experience and his passion for tennis is as great as my own and although health issues has not seen him play tennis for four years, his love of the game is undiminished. As a team our skill sets complement each other well to enable us to deliver quality tennis services efficiently and professionally. Many of you will know his daughter Megan, who plays for the club and currently holds the U16 and U18 club titles.

Once again I would like to say how delighted I am at the faith your committee has put in me and Tennis Works and we look forward to being associated with SSLTC for many years to come.

Kind regards,

John Cavill
