OUR VISION

Tennis Works was established in 2000 by John Cavill in Milton Keynes, UK. It was a small coaching business that delivered community-based coaching to schools, clubs, and public centres. Over the years, the company grew to 20 coaches in 18 venues, delivering day-to-day coaching to over 1000 people per week. As participation grew, so did the need to support competitive players aspiring for country-level and above. In 2005, John created a club-based Competition Programme to help those talented juniors train in a high-intensity environment.

Tennis Works has emerged as a leading destination for tennis enthusiasts looking beyond traditional ways of offering tennis lessons. The platform continues to thrive as a coaching community and enables participants to actively gain knowledge and hone their skills to dominate the court effortlessly.

THE HISTORY OF TENNIS WORKS

In the realm of tennis lessons, John Cavill envisions a departure from subpar information on the internet and YouTube. At Tennis Works, the vision is centred on empowering coaches to build on their unique beliefs, fostering turbulence, problem-solving, and self-reflection among players and coaches alike.

The platform leverages diverse coaching connections, creating a global community that rejects rigid systems, and providing a transformative platform for learning and experience-sharing. Tennis Works is a visionary space that dismisses the one-size-fits-all approach and embraces a personalised, adaptive coaching philosophy.

It always was and still is John’s ambition to help as many people as possible through tennis. To enable him to do this, he teamed up with Melvyn Jones in 2010 to make it happen. The new strategic plan was to evolve Tennis Works into a Tennis Development and Education Resource Company that ‘Inspires Tennis Excellence’. With the use of modern technology and some innovative ideas, Tennis Works is now able to communicate and share information with thousands of people around the world via tennisworks.net, a membership website. Tennis Works was the first company in the world to introduce webinars as tennis lessons back in 2010. The content within the website was attributed to many different sources, from the coach who developed Grand Slam Champions Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya to coaches running highly successful grassroots programmes.

Tennis Works was never just about John but about bringing people together, and as part of this, a comprehensive schedule of live seminars was organised to connect coaches together to learn and share ideas. Even to this day, the seminars and webinars continue to be a huge success. All events are professionally filmed and edited to produce high-value content for the website to share with the members.

In 2023, Melvyn retired from the business, and John took full control. The next phase of Tennis Works needed investment and an increase in workforce, so John employed a Senior Content Manager in November 2023 to focus on developing a brand new website with more features, more tools, and a highly improved user experience. Furthermore, John also recruited a Social Media Expert to help publicise the benefits of Tennis Works as well as an administrator to manage the day-to-day tasks.

February 2024 saw the dawn of a new era, with the brand new tennisworks.net being launched along with all the other support services. Tennis Works continues to gather increasing momentum, stature, and credibility within the industry, attracting expert contributors and professional partners to help educate, involve, and connect people around the globe to enjoy the wonderful game of tennis…and the story continues to get better!

JOHN is the proud founder of Tennis Works, an innovative tennis development and educational resources company. Sport has always played a huge part in John’s life, as, from a very young age, he was heavily committed to playing club football. When John was 14, he would attend a local tennis session once a week on public courts in Aylesbury, which was on a pay-and-play basis. This was the start of John’s involvement in tennis and a huge reason why he is so passionate about grass roots and community tennis.

Having joined Aylesbury Tennis Club at the age of 16, he also qualified as the youngest coach in the country through the USPTR in 1994. While teaching was in his blood, he continued to regularly compete, and in 1995, he was a divisional national champion.

After completing A-Levels at Aylesbury Grammar School, he went to Lincoln to study Sports Science with Administration and Coaching. After successfully completing his course, he joined the coaching team at David Lloyd Milton Keynes. Within 9 months, John took the programme from 90 players to 310! These were the first signs of how successful he could be in increasing participation.

In 2000, John established Tennis Works, and while he grew the coaching business to national acclaim, he developed many great relationships with coaches and clubs both in the UK and abroad. Having access to great mentors inspired John to find a way of sharing this with the world, and later the business evolved into a Tennis Development and Educational resources company via tennisworks.net.

In 2013, John was appointed to the role of Director of Tennis at Stony Stratford Tennis Club, UK. He took this sleeping giant of a club that was underperforming to become a place of excellence with a flourishing coaching programme and record membership numbers since its inception over 100 years ago.

Under John’s guidance, Tennis Works is not just about tennis lessons; it’s a transformative journey offering discovery, opportunity, and support. John continues to run this flagship club with his long-standing team of coaches that attract attention from governing bodies, coaches, and parents alike, due to the quality of the players being developed, engagement amongst the members, and the financial security that will look after the club and tennis for years to come.
